MIT Develops Video Game For Budding Scientists

Fast Company reports that five-thousand students are currently playing a game developed by MIT as an experiment in “alternative science education.” MIT explains the premise of the game, called Vanished:

“The premise is that people living in the future have contacted us in the present, to answer a question: What event occurred between our time and theirs that led to the loss of civilization’s historical records? Students must decode clues in hidden messages, and in response find and provide information about Earth’s current condition, such as temperature and species data, to help people in the future deduce what wound up happening.”

The game was developed jointly by the school’s Comparative Media Studies program and its Scheller Teacher Education Program under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The narrative-based game lasts for two months, during which students can video chat with professional scientists and uncover in-game clues by visiting Smithsonian-affiliated museums.
