Alcohol Ed. goes online in Oregon… Does it minimize binge drinking?

The University of Oregon’s Daily Emerald student newspaper reports that alcohol education classes are moving online. Reporter Deborah Bloom writes that the school had 12% alcohol use in the past month than other schools nationwide, according to the American College Health Association. Oregon’s Office of Student Life is introducing an “AlcoholEdu” program: It’s a customized, online education course that new freshman may be required to take before they arrive on campus. It’s two hours long and includes in-depth information on alcohol and how it affects the brain and body. At many campuses, such courses are one of several electives one can take for a whole semester. The idea that all incoming freshman learn the material is a smart move by Oregon administrators. Bloom writes:

In 2009, the U.S. Department of Education released a survey crediting the University of Oregon with one of the highest instances of alcohol-related violations among comparably sized institutions, as reported by The Register-Guard….

More than 500 colleges in the country utilize AlcoholEdu, but in different capacities. The University of California, Berkley, for instance, requires all incoming freshman to take the course, whereas some colleges, such as Georgetown University, require students to take the course only if they are sanctioned for alcohol use.
