Bulls and Bears: Wall Street View of Devry Inc. Ticks Up

The Wall Street consensus on Devry Inc. is still mixed although Ariel Sokol at UBS Research upgraded it to a buy this week, saying, it’s a “business model that could see long-term revenue growth of 5-10%/yr.” While 15 analysts have buy or strong buy recommendations, 9 still recommend hold. Sokol predicts Devry’s stock price – now trading just above $60 a share – could go up to $75 a share in the next 12 months:

We believe that DeVry is differentiated from its peers given its 1) geographic footprint; and 2) focus on career education (technical degrees that can lead to jobs).  This one-two punch can in our opinion shield the company from increasing competitive threats from both institutions seeking to take market share.”

Other views from Wall Street:

  • Sokol at UBS also handicaps Capella’s $14.9 million acquisition of the UK’s Resource Development International as small potatoes. Capella’s move into international education is “potentially a positive development,” Sokol answers.
  • Over at, Dan Caplinger compiled a list of companies that cleaned up their debt. DeVry repaid $44.8M in debt. Caplinger says the short list included companies that reduced their debt burden to zero.
