Cloud-power: Why Saba Software Stock is up in spite of 1Q12 losses

Saba Software (NASDAQ: SABA), reports some pretty dreary results with 1Q losses double the same period last year. But the stock is up because investors thought the company’s results were not as bad as they expected. You’ll recall last quarter was pretty dismal, and sent the stock on a tail spin from around $9.

But on a bright note for the company, and perhaps fueling the stock’s up-tick today: cloud power. Here’s more evidence the cloud is growing not only in size, but also a legitimate source of growing revenues. As we reported earlier, IBM is also making moves to get big in the cloud.

Total quarterly billings up 18% with cloud billings growing 81% year-over-year

Cloud revenue grew 59% year-over-year

Subscription revenue up 26% year-over-year; representing 61% of total revenues

Subscription revenue gross margin expanded to 77%

Total deferred revenue increased 29% year-over-year to $43.9 million
