When Did the MBA Evolve and Crawl Onto Digital Land? [Infographic]

Hard to believe, but online MBAs have been around for nearly a quarter of a century. That might have been before Al Gore invented the Internet.

This infographic does an excellent job of placing the online MBA in proper historical context. What seems to be a huge wave sweeping through the hallowed halls of business learning institutions began in— if you can believe it— 1987, at Aspen University Online.

Aspen continues to operate today. According to a spokesperson, they currently have 400 MBA students enrolled. Some estimates report nearly 4,000 graduates over the last two decades. Today, the MBA degree tuition is around $10,800 according to their website. Retention rate is under 50%. We’re going to talk with Aspen a little more in depth about how the program has changed.

Of course, the sponsors of this infographic, University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school, placed itself at the end of the evolution timeline. Indeed, evolution takes a long time— and in this case, 24 years later, UNC launched its own online MBA offering. Of course, evolution has a cost— in this case $89,000.
