Back to the Future: .edu-Only University Groups on Facebook

Facebook is piloting a new product, “Groups at University,” for its higher education student cohort. But not returning to its roots exactly. Users with a university’s “.edu” email address can create groups related to their interests that are only visible to those with the same university email address.

Vanderbilt and Brown are allegedly the only two universities in testing.  These universities are believed to have separate email addresses for their alumni, which would successfully keep alumni out of the groups. Do they have different email addresses for faculty and staff? Not so sure.  It does not seem that way. One recent Vanderbilt graduate claims he gets to use his student email address indefinitely as an alumnus and that he has access to Groups (see comments under Josh Constine’s article – link below).

It will be interesting to see how students use Groups and how universities respond.  How can universities provide oversight?  Or would that defeat the purpose?
