College students are certainly one group of experts that ought to be a part of the education reform dialogue with policy makers. Undergraduate Students at the University of Michigan are mobilizing to reform education in the U.S.  U. Michigan student Libby Ashton founded rEDesign to organize the grassroots initiative. Their objective is to “rEDesign” education that is more conducive to producing high school graduates that go on to college. Students at other colleges are welcome to participate. Hopefully rEDesign will connect the young and committed advocates with high school drop-outs and high school graduates who do not go on to pursue post secondary education for a more balanced perspective in this effort.

Liz Dwyer, Education Editor at GOOD Education wrote about the student-based movement:

Although teachers, education reformers, and policymakers have spent plenty of time debating the best way to improve schools, students have rarely been involved in the discussions. Libby Ashton, founder and president of rEDesign, says college students bring a valuable perspective to the push to improve public schools because they’re fresh out of high school and “still identify with our roles as students.” They know what it takes to get into college and succeed, but they also have fresh memories of what its like to “feel completely uninspired and isolated in school.”

rEDesign advocates get the word out on YouTube, Twitter and DoSomething.org.
