Apple Launches iBooks Author App and Cheap Interactive Textbooks

Day 441: Textbooks, old & new

Mashable’s Ulanoff reports: Apple aims to make textbook writing as simple and intuitive as dragging and dropping multimedia content. In tandem, Apple introduces a new textbook platform that includes interactive features like transforming highlights directly to flashcards, quick feedback quizes and inline glossary links.

All this on iPads, of course.

Now we know why trad publishers like Cengage, Pearson and McGraw-Hill were not worried. They’ll be able to migrate their content onto the platform. Titles are already prepared to go with the launch.

The closest competitor in the space is Inkling, and we have to think they’re a bit nervous right now. As the saying goes, first mover has the target on their back. But then again, if Inkling can maintain their early lead, the competition can only  be good for consumers.

The presentation continues…Ulanoff has a helpful live blog going on from the event for those who can’t be there in person.
